Black History is full of hidden figures whose stories have been over-shadowed by others.
For Black History Month, we want to celebrate and honour a selection of these people in our studies.
This month in Onyx Class, we have been learning about Onesimus, an enslaved African man in Boston who helped save generations from smallpox in the early 1700s with a revolutionary process called variolation.
It was Onesimus’ knowledge of the practice of variolation that not only saved thousands of lives in the 1700’s, but also provided the basis of the common practice we now know today as vaccination.
Studying history helps us to understand the world we live in today. Onesimus’ contribution to the understanding of smallpox, and its prevention lives on today.
