A lovely way to introduce children to money is to ask them to point out the prices of items when you are out shopping. They can help to select the coins and notes when paying, looking at the similarities and differences between the coins. Using the language of ‘more, less, cost, amount, pence and pound’ is a great way to encourage them to use the language too. A nice game is to price some objects at home (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p) and then to ask the children to select the correct coins and work out the change needed.
When out walking, counting games are also fun. It can be extended to counting backwards, or in 2s or 10s.
Now that the children are more confident with numbers they like to record their findings in number sentences or tally charts.
Maths is fun and all around us!
