Maths at St. Mark’s
Intent
At St. Mark’s Primary School, our intention is to deliver an exceptional, inclusive mathematics curriculum that inspires a love for learning and develops lifelong numeracy skills. Through a carefully planned approach rooted in the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) method, we ensure that every child, regardless of starting point, can access and succeed in mathematics. We are committed to mastery, ensuring all pupils build fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. Our goal is for all learners to not only meet but exceed national expectations, developing resilience and independence in their learning.
Implementation
Our mathematics curriculum is underpinned by the White Rose scheme of work, but we plan from scratch to tailor each lesson to meet the diverse needs of our students. In the lower years, we place a strong emphasis on the use of manipulatives, ensuring that all pupils have concrete tools to help them visualise mathematical concepts. Our teaching is focused on fluency, with a commitment to ensuring that children can access learning at their own level. We embed CPA methodology throughout, ensuring that pupils gradually move from concrete experiences to abstract understanding, all while being supported by a robust system of interventions and differentiation.
We prioritise professional development for our staff, ensuring they are equipped to deliver innovative and evidence-based teaching practices that drive exceptional progress. Regular assessment and targeted interventions ensure that every pupil is supported to master key concepts and make accelerated progress where needed.
Impact
The success of our approach is reflected in our outstanding Key Stage 2 maths results, with our pupils consistently performing in the long term. Through the CPA method, children develop a deep understanding of mathematical principles, enabling them to confidently tackle complex problems and demonstrate mastery across all areas of the curriculum. The fluency and independence fostered by our approach equip pupils not only for success in standardised testing but also for the mathematical challenges they will encounter throughout their education.
Our impact is evident in the sustained progress our children make year after year, with children developing strong problem-solving skills, resilience, and the ability to reason mathematically. By embedding high expectations and fostering a positive attitude towards maths, we ensure our pupils are not just meeting but exceeding national standards, setting them up for continued success in secondary school and beyond.
