History at St. Mark’s

Intent

At St. Mark’s C of E Primary School, our History curriculum is designed to provide students with a chronological and diverse exploration of past civilizations and significant historical events. We aim to immerse our learners in various eras and cultural contexts, helping them understand the development of human societies and behaviours over time.

Implementation

A Chronological and Diverse Exploration: Our History curriculum spans from ancient civilizations to modern times, giving students a broad understanding of historical progression. Key topics include: – Ancient Civilisations: Students delve into the lives and achievements of cultures like the Egyptians, the Benin Empire, and the Shang Dynasty. They learn about innovations, traditions, and the contributions these societies made to history. British History: Students explore significant events and figures in British history, such as World War II and the impactful contributions of Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. This helps them grasp how these events shaped British society. Developing Historians: Our curriculum equips students with the skills to analyze sources, understand historical contexts, and connect different time periods. Through engaging lessons and activities, they become effective historians who can think critically about the past. Celebrating Heritage and Achievements: We celebrate and reflect our students’ diverse heritages, allowing them to connect their personal histories with classroom learning. Events like Black History Month and Remembrance Sunday provide rich opportunities for cultural exploration. Students showcase their learning through performances in assemblies, reinforcing their understanding while building confidence and public speaking skills. Enriching Learning Experiences: To enhance classroom learning, we leverage London’s rich historical resources. Visits to notable institutions such as the London Mithraeum, the British Museum, and the V&A Museum offer students firsthand experiences with historical artifacts. These trips bring history to life and provide valuable context for their studies.

Impact

At St. Mark’s, our History curriculum fosters a deep appreciation for the past while equipping students with essential skills for their future. By engaging with diverse cultures and historical narratives, students build cultural capital that enriches their understanding of the world and prepares them for global citizenship. Our students consistently demonstrate strong historical knowledge and critical thinking skills, reflected in their engagement and performance in assessments. The connections they make between their personal histories and broader historical contexts not only enhance their academic experience but also cultivate empathy and respect for others. Through dynamic learning experiences, we inspire a lifelong interest in history, empowering our students to become informed, respectful, and open-minded individuals in a diverse society.
