Our Curriculum

Intent

At St. Mark’s Church of England Primary School, our bespoke curriculum is rooted in our Christian ethos, guided by the vision “Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). Our aim is to provide a deep, rich, and well-rounded educational experience that supports the academic, social, and spiritual flourishing of every child. Our curriculum is designed around five key strands: spirituality, academic excellence, creativity, community, and resilience. These strands reflect our commitment to holistic development, ensuring that children not only gain knowledge but also grow in character. By embedding these values throughout our teaching, we create an environment where children feel supported, challenged, and inspired to become their best selves.

Implementation

Our curriculum is uniquely tailored to reflect the needs and diversity of our local community. It is carefully planned to ensure that learning progresses seamlessly from Reception to Year 6, building knowledge and skills year on year. Each subject follows a structured and coherent sequence of learning, with clear expectations at every stage. While subjects are taught and assessed independently, we recognise the importance of cross-curricular links, creating meaningful learning opportunities that deepen understanding. For example, historical events are explored through geography, art, and literature, offering a comprehensive view of the topic and fostering connections between different areas of learning.

We also prioritise cultural capital and enrichment through educational trips, museum visits, immersive theatre experiences, and outdoor learning. These opportunities broaden children’s horizons and deepen their understanding of the world. By introducing a wealth of cultural, historical, and social experiences, we ensure that pupils develop the essential knowledge and confidence needed to become informed, responsible, and thoughtful citizens.

Impact

The impact of our curriculum is seen in the high levels of engagement, curiosity, and achievement demonstrated by our pupils. The progression of learning is central to our curriculum design, with clearly defined objectives for each year group. Teachers closely track and assess progress, adapting their teaching to meet the individual needs of each child. This ensures that all pupils, regardless of their starting point, are supported in their learning journey.

We aim for our pupils to leave St. Mark’s confident, well-rounded, and fully prepared for the next stage of their education. Our focus on inclusion, personal growth, and resilience means that every child is given the opportunity to succeed. By fostering a love for learning, encouraging critical thinking, and offering enrichment opportunities, we equip children with the skills, knowledge, and values they need to thrive both academically and in life.
