Today, we had great fun gardening with Caroline
As a whole class, we played a game to decide which items could or couldn’t be put in the compost.
Then, in groups, we investigated compost and carefully uncovered different minibeasts.
Last, Caroline showed us St Mark’s compost heap.

don’t put meat scrapes,bones,grease,whole eggs,or dairy prouducts to the compost pile because they decompose slowly, cause odors and can attract rodents

* Dog poo is not good for compost because it will make it smell funny
* Worms and woodlice were found in the compost. We did not find any spiders.

The items that are good to go in compost are fruit, vegetable scraps, crushed eggshells, fallen leaves, and tiny pieces of paper.
The items that are not good for compost are meat scraps, bones, grease, whole eggs, or dairy products in compost because they decompose quickly and can attract rodents and flies.
My group and I found minibeasts for example centipedes, and mostly worms. A fun fact I learned about worms is that they breathe through their skin!

Tea bags , sticks and paper cut up in small bits.

Which mini beasts help the compost?
We found loads of earth worms, beetles, and woodlice.
Fun fact:
If an earth worm’s tail falls off they can still live.
The items you can put on a compost heap to help the process are; tea bags, small sticks and little bits of paper.
The items to avoid are: Dog poo, meat and dairy products,
We found woodlice, lots of earth worms and beetle. Surprisingly there were no spiders.
Fun fact: An earthworm can grow a new tail if the old one gets cut off.
I fort gardening was good and I learnt more about worms and that they breathe in their skin. It was fun and I liked it. when we got the worms and woodlise. And when we said yes or no at the beginning of the gardening lesson.
